Forget Microsoft Security Essentials. That will end when Vista support ends in April. Avast worked in XP after End of Life.
What program did you have installed before? Have you tried using the authentic removal tool for that program?

MSE v.4.4.304.0 still works with with XP; don't know version currently supported with Vista, but if after EOS for Vista that version should work as long as one refuses updates for newer version that would be available for Win 7.

Still doesn't matter which singular AV one uses, a layered approach and education of best practice will better serve average user.

Then I guess no one at the MMPC ever read...

<QP>

Will Microsoft Security Essentials be supported after [Extended Support for WinXP SP3 ends on] April 8, 2014?

...If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive anti-malware signature updates through July 14, 2015. However, please note that PCs running Windows XP after April 8, 2014 should not be considered protected. [emphasis mine]

COMMENT: MSE, even if running with current Defs, cannot & will not protect a computer from the vulnerabilities addressed by the hundreds (thousands?) of critical security updates released since 08 April 2014 [i.e., MS14-022 & higher] for Vista, Win7, Win8.1 and Win10 but not WinXP.

EOS for Vista certainly should be indication for OP that OS (and possibly machine) require upgrade.

'Den again,' said an ursine from hibernation if that was XP machine originally, then rollback and knowing what to search for

KB3203621

KB article doesn't indicate IE8 but highlighted update file (top left) does.

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/search.aspx?q=kb3197655 tells us there's an IE8 update for WES09 [Windows Embedded Standard 2009] and [Windows Embedded] POSReady 2009 but not for WinXP, Vista, or Win7. [Yes, there's a difference.]
